The story arc of Dressrosa was the beginning of the Gear 4th’s odyssey.

During his confrontation with Doflamingo, the need for a brand new skill for the Straw Hats’ captain was quite obvious, since the savage pink flamingo was having the upper hand in terms of strength, speed, and defense.

What could have been more effective as a brand new skill, based on the combination of Gear 3 and the Haki: the muscle-balloon type of Gear?

By the way, we are talking here : When does Luffy use gear 3 ?!

Unfortunately, he didn’t have time to deal with Doffy before his Gear 4 ran out of power, postponing the inevitable end of this breathless battle.

I bet you were thrilled too at the sight of Luffy’s body inflating more muscularly for the first time, with the aura of Haki surrounding.

Moreover, we craved this kind of moment, since Luffy didn’t show outstanding progress regarding his Gear usage, since the arc of Enies Lobby.

A palm of honor, for the determination of the Straw Hats, back then.

When does Luffy use Gear 4 for the second time?

After reaching the time limit of his Gear 4th, Straw Hat Luffy had to buy time to restore his Haki and strike back.

Luckily, his former opponents, the Colosseum Gladiators joined and helped Luffy to get away and recover.

Ten minutes for the Haki restoration, while the birdcage was relentlessly tightening.

Soon enough, in Episode 733 and Chapter 790, Luffy restored his Haki, and resolutely went back to the battle, under the hopeful sight of the citizens and fighters of Dressrosa.

Who said pirates weren’t heroes !!!

The second form of Gear 4, known as Tankman (Tank-man) was introduced in the breathtaking fight between Luffy and the Sweet Commander of the Big Mom Pirates, Cracker.

This was a tough fight for Luffy as he struggled to break through Cracker’s defense and his multiple cookie clones.

However, with the use of his new form Tankman which is part of his Gear 4th arsenal, he was finally able to take the upper hand over his treacherous foe and send him waltzing away with a busted belly punch.

Expeditious as sound speed!

When does Luffy use Gear 4 Snakeman?

The most iconic use of Gear 4th was against Katakuri in Whole Cake Island, the Snakeman.

This battle was just epic, in every sense.

As Luffy confronted the n°1 among the Sweet Commander Charlotte Katakuri, he surpassed his limits over and over again, never staying down.

Furthermore, we also realized how unique and prodigious Luffy is, as he got the hang of the advanced Observation Haki, learning it in the middle of a deadly battle.

A while after tapping into his brand-new foreseeing skills, he came up with the stylish serpentine powers of Gear 4 Snakeman.

Lightning-fast reflexes, hardly predictable strikes, and unparalleled flexibility were the perfect cocktail to make Katakuri and his mochi-abilities surrender.

The first time the third form of the Gear 4 was used was in Episode 869 and Chapter 894 of the series.

Let’s admit that it was a beautiful and exhilarating fight, since Luffy kept standing back after each fall, and Katakuri never felt ‘till the end.

This fight showed just how far Luffy has come since his first use of Gear 4th against Doflamingo. It also marked a turning point in his character development as he became more serious and strategic in his battle.

Conclusion

Gear 4 is an indispensable tool that Luffy uses only when necessary and is always prepared to push his limits to achieve victory.

Luffy uses Gear 4 when he needs to go all out against formidable opponents and now can even take full advantage of its different forms while managing its draining effects.

And, when the time will prove his overall power to reach a new scale, then will rise the era of the Gear 5th!

Meanwhile, keep sailing Otakus!!!
