So far in One Piece’s storyline, Luffy kept performing miracles with his typical rubbery fruit skills and overtaking legendary pirates. But, didn’t you ever ponder how the story would be if Luffy was the owner of another devil fruit’s power, the Mera Mera no Mi; that’s what this article is going to talk about.
We are about to explore a parallel universe in which Luffy, instead of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, ate the Logia-type Mera Mera no Mi, the former one of his brother Ace. And you can rewind the normal plotline events about his legacy, the Mera Mera no Mi, here !
Once again, I will be your guide in this current article. I feel pleased to escort you through this content about One Piece’s passionate universe, which I have been fancying since younger ages from 2008 up to now. I expect you will have fun reading this one.
So, here we go!
How strong would Luffy be with the Mera Mera Fruit?
The Mera Mera fruit a.k.a Flame Flame Fruit is a Logia-type devil fruit that allows its user fire abilities. Therefore, its bearer can generate impressive bursts of fire and control them as well.
Logia users can transform their anatomy’s internal textures into a specific natural element, and control it as if it was alive.
In addition, their most reputed ability is intangibility, which makes them unharmable with standard attacks. Only Armament Haki and Seastone negate that asset skill.
Besides, users could expand control over masses of elements of their fruit attribute, wherever in the environment. A transformed Logia’s body reacts the same way as the natural element.
Therefore, the Mera Mera no Mi’s bearer will easily withstand heat-based attacks and could propel fire salvos to make dashes, inducing high mobility in proper use. It also can potentially burn things in close contact, even enemies or swords, etc.
Most of Logia’s powers correlations are likely to give the same result as meant in nature. As fire having the upper hand on the wood, or water extinguishing the fire.
Some matchups can be equal or stalemate too. It’s particularly what happened when Ace first faced Smoker, a Marine Officer and Logia user of the Smoke Smoke Fruit. Their fight was destined to end as a draw, due to their respective Fruit attribute.
The Flame Flame fruit was found on an island in East Blue named Sixis, by Ace D. Portgas and Masked Deuce. Due to a shipwreck, they were going through starvation when they found the Mera Mera Fruit, ignoring it was a devil fruit. The fruit was split into two pieces; Ace got the first bite acquiring its power.
Coming to think of Luffy as the Flame Flame fruit eater, he should be incredible.
Oda intentionally gave Luffy a power that, compared to all of his opponents, could be considered as weak.
He wanted to exploit at its maximum the “rubber power”, and make it overtake tremendous abilities; no matter how restricting it was thought to be. All of this with a whole bunch of fun and hilarious events.
We already know what Ace could do with those skills, and Luffy won’t be less skilled.
Luffy would be immensely strong, being granted pyrokinetic abilities from the beginning. First of all:
- Only considering the ability to produce unrestricted amounts of flames assure a tremendous heat discharge. It’s even more sensible when we know how those flames can easily blow hordes of Marine soldiers away, as at Marine Ford. Blazing entire cities and boats.
- He could also employ it to increase his mobility, by converging his flames. In the case of advanced mastery, we could witness blitzing and exceptional moves to dodge enemies’ attacks. Maybe the likes of Shinra, of Fire Force anime’s series.
- He might be strafing fire bullets, generating fire-coat bucklers, creating scorching sphere-like attacks, etc. This fire-igniting ability allows awesome versatility.
It would be nice to see that giant burning sphere, as the one Ace came up with as he was fighting against Blackbeard.
Following that logic, most of the fights of the pre-time skip’s debut would be just expeditious. Especially with Logias having weaker attributes or special Paramecias as Mr. 3. He won’t need to fear too much of “the icer” Aokiji, anymore.
Besides, the intangibility provided will comfort Luffy’s rashness and boldness. For opponents with average resistance, it will be hard to hit him without getting burnt. And the regenerative potentiality of Logias happens to be useful in battles.
Moving along to his additional skills as Gears and Haki, things would be a bit different.
For the most part, since Gear 2 is based on his gummy vessels’ flexibility, he can’t use it anymore. Neither Gear 3 nor some forms of Gear 4. On the other hand, he is still able to learn Hardening of Armament Haki, Observation Haki, and the Color of Conqueror’s Haki.
His fighting style will still be similar to Ace’s one.
Gaining an overall improvement, Luffy will become greater, as a bearer of the Mera Mera no Mi.
Wouldn’t Luffy be weaker somehow?
As it happens with most Logia users, they are sometimes less precautious, overcounting on their immateriality.
Not being aware of auxiliary weaknesses as Seastone or Armament Haki, can be lethal over the seas of the New World.
An additional trade-off is the interactions with other Devil Fruits’ attributes.
Encountering opponent pirates with an imperfect match, and it’s big trouble. It’s not impossible to have identical results as with Ace if a Mera Mera Luffy ever comes across Akainu.
Normally, the user of Mera Mera no Mi skills should be resistant to heat-based attacks. However, Magma’s temperature is higher than Fire’s.
Therefore, in our plotline, Luffy would intake damage whenever he gets in contact with a transformed Akainu lava. Moreover, these damages won’t heal up and stay permanent.
And, that was the main reason behind Ace’s tragic death. All this reminds me of the painfulness of the farewell of Luffy’s brother.
Nevertheless, being aware of the vulnerabilities of a Logia state, our Mera Mera Luffy would progress faster and greater to honor his brother’s legacy.
