One Piece is a popular manga series that has captured the hearts of millions of fans worldwide with its amazing plotlines and wonderfully detailed characters. One of the most intriguing aspects of the story is the relationship between Monkey D. Luffy, Portgas D. Ace, and Sabo. We know that they refer to each other as brothers, but how did that bond come to be?

That’s why, today, we will answer this question: how are luffy ace and Sabo related? We will do this by delving into their backstory and examining the ways in which they are related and the circumstances that brought them together.

I have been closely following and analyzing One Piece since 2008 and will act as your guide.

So take a seat, and let’s sail!

Their History

how are Luffy Ace and Sabo related

Ace, Luffy, and Sabo come from three very different backgrounds and their own unique stories. Before trying to understand how they came together and what the nature of their brotherhood is, we need to understand where they come from.

  • Ace was the biological son of the former kid of the pirates, Gol. D. Roger, and his lover, a woman named Portugal. D. Rogue. After Roger’s execution, Fugue prolonged her pregnancy for eleven extra months to keep Ace safe from marines, after which she died, leaving Ace in the care of Roger’s rival, vice admiral, Monkey. D. Garp. Garp brought Ace to the Goa kingdom and left him in the care of Dadan and her bandits.
  • Luffy is Garp’s grandson and the son of the leader of the Revolutionary Army, Monkey. D. Dragon. Garp brought Luffy to Dadan after his encounter with Shanks and the red-haired pirates at Windmill village. That is how Ace and Luffy met in the care of the mountain bandits. Their relationship was rough initially as Ace ignored Luffy and did not want to talk to him.
  • Sabo was born into a noble but morally bankrupt family of the Goa kingdom. He eventually ran away from home because he hated his family for only caring about their wealth and status and not giving him the affection he needed as a child. He met and became friends with Ace in the forest near the Gray Terminal and eventually met Luffy.

All three were united by their desire to set out to sea as pirates.

The Brotherhood Relationship

how are Luffy Ace and Sabo related

When Luffy met them, Ace and Sabo were already friends and did not want to associate with him. Ace and Sabot used to leave Luffy behind as they thought he was a nuisance. That changed when they had to save him, Bro Bluejam, and his crew at the Gray Terminal.

After that, they planned to set out to sea as pirates together. As they trained under a man called Naguri to defeat a tiger and decide who would be the captain of their crew, they stole Sake and Sakazuki from Dadan. They exchanged cups and stood sake together, which in traditional terms, made them brothers for life.

So that is how Ace, Luffy, and Sabo became two elder and one younger brothers.

The Bond of the ASL Pirates

how are Luffy Ace and Sabo related

The bond that the three shared was one forged through their own individual pain and dreams. Luffy wanted to keep his promise to Shanks, Ace wanted to set out to see and prove that he was more than just the son of Roger, and Sabo wanted to leave the pain and misery caused by his family behind. All three of them wanted to set out to sea and had their own dreams.

It was those dreams and a desire to fulfill them together that created an unbreakable bond between them. They wanted to set sail together as the ASL pirates, and they even built themselves a pirate ship. They were brothers, united by their pain, their time with Dadan, and their fear of Garp.

Their bond was unbreakable, and had Sabo retained his memories, he, as the Chief-of-staff of the Revolutionary Army, Ace as the second division commander of the Whitebeard pirates, and Luffy as the captain of the Strawhat pirates, would have been unstoppable.

The Legacy of Their Relationship

Their brotherhood drives One Piece as a whole. It was that bond and losing Sabo was what formed Luffy’s desire to protect his Nakama. It was his bond with his brothers that enabled Ace to accept the love that he deserved from the Whitebeard pirates.

When Sabo reappeared at Dressrosa, Luffy was beyond overjoyed and let him compete for Ace’s devil fruit. Sabo now has Ace’s Flare-Flare fruit, meaning Sabo carries the will of Ace.

Their bond, even in Ace’s death, is unshakable, as it was knowledge of that death which brought back Sabo’s memories.

Conclusion

So, in conclusion, we know that Ace, Luffy, and Sabo are brothers in every sense of the word. They were connected by their experiences, and they had a bond that was unshakable. So to answer our question, Ace, Luffy, and Sabo were not biologically related, but they were brothers because they chose each other as their family.

But that is our belief. If you have other theories, do let us know. Perhaps you think Ace and Luffy have a deeper connection as they both carry the initial D that seems so significant in the world of One Piece. Whatever the case, we look forward to hearing your opinion.
